The Maria-Theresien-Platz of Vienna is a large square (Platz) joining the Ringstraße (Vienna’s giant, round, central street) with the Museumsquartier, a museum of modern arts located in the former Imperial Stables. Facing each other from the sides of the square are two identical buildings, the Naturhistorisches Museum – Natural History Museum, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum – the Art History Museum. These two buildings are identical, save for the statuary on their façades. The Naturhistorisches’ façade has statues depicting personifications of the various continents known to Austrian science at the time – Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, while the Kunsthistorisches façade features famous European artists – such as the Dutch Bruegel, among others.

The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It stands in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, opposite the Jenners department store on Princes Street and near to Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station. The tower is 200 feet 6 inches (61.11 m) high, and has a series of viewing decks reached by a series of narrow spiral staircases giving panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings. The highest viewing deck is reached by a total of 287 steps (those who climb the steps can obtain a certificate commemorating the event). It is built from Binny sandstone quarried in nearby Ecclesmachan. This oily stone was known to attract dirt quickly and was probably a deliberate choice to allow the Gothic form to quickly obtain the patina of age.Arguably the soot of Edinburgh’s chimneys, in combination with smoke from the nearby railway line and Waverley Station perhaps over-egged the result, and it is now very hard to make out the numerous carved figures. Bill Bryson has described it as looking like a “gothic rocket ship”.

The Paul-Löbe-Haus is a legislative building in Berlin next to the Reichstag. This building to the west of the river Spree is part of the ‘government ribbon’. It is connected to the Chancellery and together with the Marie-Elisabeth-Luders House on the opposite side of the Spree it forms a formal and functional whole. The building contains more than 900 offices for the parliamentary deputies. It’s 200m long, 100m wide and 22m high. It has the form of a double comb with eight outer courtyards. The main entrance in the west is situated under a large imposing porch with four filigree columns. A large glass-roofed hall with glass-enclosed elevators and transparent staircases are in the middle of the block. The building is named after the last parliamentary president, until 1933, Paul Löbe (text from book ‘Berlin-New Architecture’).
