Mauritius Botanical Garden is popularly known to be one of the mostly – visited attractions in Mauritius. This garden, located near Port Louis is highly acclaimed with the nature lovers and is considered as a major hotspot with the botanist, horticulturalist, and landscape gardeners. This botanical garden is also known for being one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. The botanical garden is mostly famous for its unique collection of palms of around 85 variants from nations like, Asia, Africa, Central America, and islands around Indian Ocean. The water lilies of the park are also quite popular with the tourists. This beautiful garden, founded in 1767 was designed by Pierre Poivre. The garden covers a wide stretch spanning an area of around 37 hectares.

This botanical garden in Mauritius is also known by other names like, “Jardin des Plantes”, “Jardin Botanique Royal”, and “Jardin de Mon Plaisir”. The garden is also popular with the name of Pamplemousses Garden. It was later renamed as “Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden” in the year 1988. The origin of the garden dates back to around 300 years. This botanical garden served as a major center of horticultural research during the British and the French during the colonial era.
