Another one of those fortunate discoveries for the WhereWasItShot team. When we first noticed this location in the Nenjukkul Peidhidum song of the super-hit movie Vaaranam Aayiram, we thought it is one of those umpteen palace locations back in India as all the other locations used in the song were popular tourist attractions in India (The Gateway of India, the India Gate, the Taj Hotel in Mumbai to name a few). So, we decided against pursuing the location any further as it would have sent us on a goose hunt. And then when we were watching My Name is Khan recently, we noticed the location again and since most of that movie was based out of the Bay Area, we latched on to that clue and soon found the exact location. Visitors from the Bay Area can add more movies/ song sequences to the location as this location, from its Wiki page, has been used in many Hollywood movies as well (The Rock being the most famous of the list)
About the location (from Wiki):
The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, California is a building originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. The Palace of Fine Arts has been a favorite wedding location for couples throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. A renovation restoring the interior of the dome, the walkways around the Palace and a seismic retrofit was completed in early 2009.
The lagoon was intended to echo those found in classical settings in Europe, where the expanse of water provides a mirror surface to reflect the grand buildings and an undisturbed vista to appreciate them from a distance. Australian eucalyptus trees fringe the eastern shores. Many forms of wildlife have made their home there including swans, ducks (particularly migrating fowl), geese, turtles, frogs, and raccoons.
Movies shot at this location:
Nenjukkul Peidhidum Maamazhai from Vaaranam Aayiram
SRK – Kajol Wedding scene from My Name is Khan
Chunari Chunari from Biwi No.1
Hum Deewane Ho Jaaye from Chalo Ishq Ladaaye
