We were wrong when we documented the Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu, as we had said that it is the only remaining fort in the state of Tamil Nadu. As our friend Ravages had pointed out in our Facebook page, there are other ones that we had left out and this Thirumayam fort is one among those. We had known all along that the major portion of this song below was shot at the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal in Madurai and it was only recently when we watched the song again did we notice that there is a fort which has also been used as the filming location. After a hint from our mom that there is a fort near Pudhukottai, we found out that this is indeed the fort that has been used in the song.

About the location (from Wiki):
Thirumayam is a place of historical importance located about 20 km south of the town of Pudukkottai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Miles before reaching the town, one can see a fort atop a large hill. In past centuries, the fort was much larger than what now obtains; this is affirmed by the fact that the main entrance to the old fort lies about one kilometer south of the present-day fort. This extrance to the old fort still stands, it has a courtyard with pillared corridors and shrines of various deities. The sculptures on the pillars are truly beautiful.

The Thirumayam fort, set in 40 acres, is of great historical importance. It was built by Sethupathi Vijaya Ragunatha Thevar, ruler of Ramanathapuram in AD 1687. Sethupathi is the name of the ruling dynasty of Ramanathapuram. Another fact of historic interest is that the founder of the princely state of Pudukkottai had served as governor of Thirumayam fort before founding his own kingdom.

Movies shot at this location:
KannukkullE Kaadhalaa song from Thamizh
Mun Paniyaa song from Nandha
Scene where Karunas & Laila convince Surya to let go of his bad ways from Nandha

Thirumayam is where Kattabomman’s brother hid, while trying to escape the pursuing British. He was apparently betrayed by one of the guards of the fort, and was captured and hanged here.

Thanks for that piece of history for the us & the site visitors, Ravages. Knew that Kattabomman was betrayed in a fort but didn’t know it was this one.

This fort features in Nandha too…. it is seen in the Munpaniyaa song and also towards the end of the movie when Karunas and Laila try to convince Surya to leave all his bad ways and come with them….

Thanks for that input, Kutti. We were surprised how we missed the Mun Paniyaa song, which happens to be one of our most favorite songs. Just added both of these to the location page.
