The moment we watched the song Naan Varaindhu Vaitha Suriyan song from the movie Jeyam Kondaan, we knew that the location that has been used as the backdrop is very unique. A location that has not been seen in our Indian movies before. And when we started our search, we were proved right as this place, Samarkand in Uzbekistan, fits the word ‘unique’ perfectly. We came across reports that a song from the movie was shot in Uzbekistan and from then on it was just a matter of googling that led us to this location. We are pretty sure that no other Indian movie has been shot here but hey, we have been proved wrong so many times already by visitors. So, go ahead and let us know if you know of any other Indian movie that has been filmed here.
About the location (from Wiki):
The Registan was the heart of the ancient Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The name Registan means “Sandy place” in Persian. The Registan was a place of public executions, where also people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis.
Samarkand is the second-largest city in Uzbekistan and the capital of Samarqand Province. The city is most noted for its central position on the Silk Road between China and the West, and for being an Islamic center for scholarly study. In the 14th century, it became the capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane), and is the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Bibi-Khanym Mosque remains one of the city’s most notable landmarks. The Registan was the ancient center of the city.
