Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary – Thekkady

This is another of those hugely familiar locations that should have been used in umpteen number of movies over the 2 decades of 1980s and the 1990s. It is only after the turn of the century in 2000 when we started seeking out for greener pastures (pun intended) has this location lost its charm. But as long as there is a Mani Ratnam who sticks to inside India for all his filming needs, you never know when you will get to see this location again in an Indian movie. Again, there are only 2 movies that we know of that have been filmed here but as with most other locations in the site, we are confident that there are many more out there and looking forward to your inputs on expanding the list of movies shot at this location.
About the location (from Wiki):
Thekkady (Idukki district) is the location of the Periyar National Park. Situated in kerala, close to the Kerala – Tamil Nadu border town of Kumily, it is located about 114 km from Madurai Airport. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs.
The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is spread across 777 km² (300 sq. miles), of which 360 km² (139 sq. miles) is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake. Thekkady is considered a heaven for natural spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and clove.
